Man draws gun at police during traffic stop in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif.

Long Beach police said the officer-involved shooting happened at 11:56 p.m. Thursday in the 50 block of East 51st Street near Atlantic Avenue.

Authorities said an officer spotted the suspect's car speeding on Atlantic Avenue and pulled the driver over. Upon getting out of his car, the suspect did not follow the officer's instructions to remain where he was. Instead, the suspect drew a handgun.

That's when the officer fired several rounds, hitting the suspect in the lower torso, said police. The suspect was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was listed in critical condition.

It's unknown whether the suspect actually fired his weapon. He is expected to be booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer. Authorities said he will also likely be charged for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

The officer was not injured in the incident.
