El Monte to put proposed soda tax on ballot

EL MONTE, Calif.

The city is pursuing the tax on sugary drinks as a new funding source. It could raise up to $7 million a year.

Under the tax, businesses would be charged a penny per ounce on sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda.

Other cities around the nation have considered similar proposals to help battle obesity. The beverage industry says the tax would be discriminatory and makes no sense.
