1 dead, multiple injured, including infant, after crash in Long Beach
Police said a woman switched seats with a male passenger while officers were conducting a traffic stop. He then led police on chase, all with an infant in the car.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- At least one person was killed and multiple others were injured after a police chase ended with the suspect crashing into several cars in Long Beach. According to police, there was an infant inside the suspect's vehicle during the pursuit.



Seal Beach police initiated the chase and was the agency in pursuit at the time of the collision, according to the Long Beach Police Department.



According to Seal Beach police, it all started around 8 p.m. when officers attempted to pull over a female driver for a traffic violation near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Fifth Street.



She had a man in the passenger seat and an infant in the vehicle, according Public Information Officer Julia Clasby.



"After contacting the female driver of the vehicle, the officer returned to his vehicle [and] noticed that the female driver had switched seats with her male passenger," Clasby said.


Police said a woman switched seats with a male passenger while officers were conducting a traffic stop. He then led police on chase, all with an infant in the car, according to police.

That's when the man took off, initiating the pursuit. Clasby said at one point, the man was driving the wrong-way before the he crashed into numerous vehicles.



Aerial footage showed at least nine vehicles were involved in the wreck, including one mangled car that had at least two of its doors ripped off.



"After the collision, the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The officer deployed his Taser, which was effective in stopping the suspect," said Clasby.



The suspect, woman and infant were all sent to the hospital though details regarding their conditions were not immediately released.



Multiple victims had to be extricated from vehicles after the crash using the Jaws of Life, and six people were transported in unknown condition, fire officials said.



Eyewitness News was told the person killed was a woman in her 60s, though authorities have not released an official identification.



The crash in Long Beach unfolded about two hours before another similar incident. In downtown L.A., a two-car crash involving a DUI suspect fleeing LAPD ended with two men getting hurt.
