101 Fwy from Hollywood to downtown to partially close overnight

HOLLYWOOD (KABC) -- Drivers who use the 101 Freeway from downtown Los Angeles to Hollywood late at night should be aware both directions of the highway will see some lane closures for several days beginning Sunday.

The California Department of Transportation will close some lanes from Glendale Boulevard to Cahuenga Boulevard from midnight to 5 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday.

Caltrans will be repaving as well as installing loop detectors into the pavement which help track travel information and speeds. The loops, for example, help Google Maps and other services determine how fast traffic is moving in a particular stretch of freeway or let freeway signs know how long the commute is and indicate when onramp meters should be activated.

Caltrans emphasized that the freeways will not be entirely closed and the lane closures will only be late at night and very early in the morning, not during heavy commute times.

"I know there are some who thought we were closing the entire section down," said Patrick Chandler with Caltrans. "If that was the case we would have given it a cool name."

Some have taken to give the closure the unofficial name of the Hollywood Jam Session.

The installation is one of the final stages of a $19.2 million project to repave the 101 Freeway from downtown L.A. to Hollywood.

The project is funded by the State Highway Operation and Protection Program and is expected to finish by the end of 2016.
