MID-CITY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspect was killed during a robbery attempt after exchanging gunfire with a security guard at a Mid-City strip mall Friday morning, police said.
The shooting was reported shortly after 10 a.m. near the intersection of Venice and Hauser boulevards.
Two suspects were at a check-cashing business at the strip mall and confronted a security guard and the business owner, Los Angeles police said.
A struggle over money ensued, and a suspect shot the security guard, who returned fire, striking the suspect.
Police said the suspect died at the scene, and the security guard was hospitalized in unknown condition.
A second male suspect ran away and remains on the loose. A description of the person was not available.
Police also recovered a handgun.
Saturn Street Elementary School, located just two blocks from the scene, was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
