WEST LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- American Red Cross volunteers from Southern California are heading to states hit hard by Hurricane Matthew to help distribute food and supplies to victims of the devastating storm.

Volunteers from Los Angeles are driving disaster-relief vehicles to the hardest hit areas of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia - joining a network of Red Cross workers from all over the country.

The trucks are empty as they leave West Los Angeles, but will be filled closer to the destination, where they will provide hot meals, comfort kits, cleanup kits and other supplies.

"There are thousands of people still in shelters," said Jarrett Barrios, CEO of Red Cross LA. "There were hundreds of thousands of people who evacuated, many of whom are looking for food, for support, for where to go next."
