A car careened into the barrier wall on the freeway and then ricocheted across five lanes before crashing into the median.
A passerby called 911 to report the accident, but police didn't discover a shooting had occurred until later.
"As the Los Angeles City Fire Department was treating the driver of the damaged vehicle, we noticed that the driver had sustained a gunshot wound to the head," California Highway Patrol spokesman Leon Hines said.
LAPD homicide detectives were called in and all eastbound lanes were shut down. Hours passed as detectives examined every inch of the car and the freeway.
It appears the suspect used a handgun to fire into the car, but authorities have no suspects and no clue why.
"At this point, we have no witnesses to what occurred and we're asking for the community's help in trying to locate anyone who saw what happened," LAPD Capt. Jim Miller said.
