Deputies focus on Catalina Island gangs

July 12, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Sheriff's deputies have arrested five suspected gang members on Catalina Island in a raid designed to crackdown on what the department is calling a growing gang problem.`A sheriff's spokesman said Catalina is still a very safe place but that it's been showing signs of gang activity such as tagging, burglaries and other crimes.

The arrests were made July 2.

But Avalon's mayor Bob Kennedy said the island's crime problems are being exaggerated and are restricted to a small group of minors.
