19-year-old man faces murder charges

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES Rostislav Dimittryi Shnayder faces four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter. Police say he was allegedly speeding when his car hit a Nissan Maxima, forcing the vehicle to slam into a tree.

The driver of the car, 19-year-old Cristyn Cordova, died at the scene. She was eight months pregnant. Her friend Jason Hernandez was also killed, along with Cordova's 16-year-old sister Toni and 15-year-old brother Andrew.

Cordova's boyfriend, Carlos Campos, was thrown from the car. He survived, but remains in critical condition.

The accident happened at around 10:35 p.m. Wednesday on Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock. Police say Shnayder's white Mitsubishi Eclipse hit Cordova's Maxima, causing the Nissan to skid into the center divider. The black Nissan crashed into a tree and split in two. The impact was so extreme the Maxima was virtually unrecognizable.

Police say Shnayder remained at the scene and tried to help the people in Cordova's car. They say there is no indication that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Shnayder was taken into custody at the scene.

If convicted on all four counts of vehicular manslaughter, Shnayder faces up to 10 years in prison.

Meanwhile, a memorial fund has also been set up to help the Cordova family. People can donate to the fund through Bank of America account number; 03288-7044. The routing number is 121000358.
