3 airlines at LAX get money for safety

LOS ANGELES Southwest, Skywest and U.S. Airways will each get $600,000 to install crash-avoidance equipment in an effort to reduce the number of near misses on runways.

The L.A. Times reports that the cockpit systems will show pilots their exact locations at airports and give them information about the runways.

The FAA claims the technology could have prevented 44 percent of serious runway incursions nationwide.
