Depression can lead to belly fat

December 2, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
People suffering from depression may be more likely to develop a dangerous type of fat around their belly. It's called visceral fat - and it can raise the risk of heart disease and diabetesScientists don't know why depressed people would gain this type of weight, since many with depression have a decreased appetite.

But researchers at Wake Forest found clinically depressed people gained more belly fat over a period of time - while those who were not depressed actually lost fat.

Hopefully, the study will prompt people to get treatment for depression.
