Sea lion spotted near Oakland runway

OAKLAND, Calif. The animal, which looked thin, was recovered by Marine Mammal Center workers Tuesday and taken to the Sausalito hospital.

A spokeswoman for the center, Mieke Eerkens, said the animal did not appear to be injured. She said rescue workers estimated the male sea lion at about 6 feet long and roughly 175 pounds. It appeared to be older than a pup, but not yet a full-grown adult.

Eerkens said California sea lions are curious and sometimes wander away to explore and follow food sources.

Officials say the animal did not disrupt landings or takeoffs at the airport.
