The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors accepted a $1.4 million grant Tuesday to help process backlogged rape kits. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has come under fire for delays in testing DNA evidence collected during sexual assault investigations. The new money will improve the overall infrastructure of department's existing crime laboratory, which will increase its capacity to analyze DNA.

The objective is to reduce the number of backlogged sexual assault kits by approximately 1,100.
