San Gabriel family rescued from nearby blaze

February 16, 2010 12:00:32 AM PST
Two police officers helped rescue a family in San Gabriel after a fire broke out in a garage near their home on Monday. The fire broke out in the 1500 block of Stevens Avenue at about 9:30 p.m. and threatened homes in the area. Cell phone video captured substantial flames nearly destroying the garage.

Police and firefighters were evacuating residents because of smoke concern, but apparently, an elderly couple was so stunned by the blaze, they had trouble leaving.

"One of the officers told him to get out, and I guess in the end, he just picked up my grandfather over his shoulders and just ran out," said Christine Tran, relative of the rescued victim.

Tran said her grandmother suffered minor burns, but she said it may have been from the intense heat, not the fire.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
