Speeding truck crashes, catches fire on 5 Fwy

July 3, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
A truck that apparently lost its brakes was speeding down the Grapevine on the 5 Freeway at more than 85 mph when it crashed and caught on fire, blocking all northbound lanes just north of the Los Angeles-Kern county line.CHP officials said at least three people were injured in the crash and were taken to Bakersfield hospitals. The speeding truck hit a CHP vehicle in the left lane and then hit another car. The truck then overturned and caught on fire.

Authorities closed the north 5 near Lebec at around 8:45 a.m., where the spilled diesel fuel and burning truck were splayed across the roadway.

By around 12 p.m., all traffic was allowed past the crash site, which was in the quarter-mile-wide center median near the Grapevine Road exit.

During the delay, motorists coming from Los Angeles toward northern California were being detoured east on California 138 to routes 14 and 58 to reach the San Joaquin Valley via Tehachapi or Lancaster.

The crash is under investigation. AP and CNS contributed to this report.
