Caltrans takes heat for covering flag mural

July 4, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
Caltrans is facing controversy after it painted over a mural of an American flag near San Jose. The flag was on a retaining wall high above Interstate 680 north of San Jose.

It was painted there just a week after Sept. 11, by three men wanting to show their patriotism.

But Thursday, Caltrans decided the flag was on state property and painted over it, calling the 35-foot flag mural graffiti.

In a statement Friday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called the decision to paint over the flag "unconscionable" and apologized to the men who painted it.
