August 11, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
Robert Rubane Diaz, the so-called "Angel of Death" nurse convicted and sentenced to death in 1984 for injecting 12 patients in Banning and Perris hospitals with a fatal dose of a heart medication, died Wednesday of natural causes. Diaz, 72, was sent to California's death row with 12 counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances.

The patients died in hospitals where Diaz was employed as a nurse.

Since 1978, when California reinstated capital punishment, 51 condemned inmates have died from natural causes.

As of August 11, 2010, there were 706 people on California's death row.
