Customs seizes counterfeit sunglasses at port

Customs agents at the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex have seized more than $12 million worth of counterfeit sunglasses in the past two weeks. The latest shipment seized included nearly 77,000 pairs of sunglasses, with a street value of nearly $80,000, a U.S. customs spokesman reported.

The sunglasses, in three different shipments from China, were "confusingly similar" to Coach, Gucci and Emporio Armani designer protected trademarks, a customs agent said.

Along with the negative impact on legitimate manufacturers and on the U.S. economy, counterfeit sunglasses may not be impact-resistant, may cause injury by shattering and may fail to provide UV protection, Jaime Ruiz of U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.
