Pelosi will run for House Democratic leader

WASHINGTON Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House, has received pressure from moderate House Democrats who cried out for new party leadership. But in a letter to her colleagues, Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that many have encouraged her to try to keep her spot as the House Democratic Leader.

"Our work is far from finished. As a result of Tuesday's election, the role of Democrats in the 112th Congress will change, but our commitment to serving the American people will not," Pelosi said in the letter. "We have no intention of allowing our great achievements to be rolled back. It is my hope that we can work in a bipartisan way to create jobs and strengthen the middle class."

Republicans snatched away control of the U.S. House of Representatives during the midterm election.

House members elect their respective party leaders, although the entire House elects the speaker. Current minority leader Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) will likely take that post.
