I.E. family in need wins Thanksgiving car

RIVERSIDE, Calif. "Just been busing, walking, doing what we have to do," Pamela Sloan said. "It's been a real struggle for us."

Their commute got a lot easier Wednesday. The couple received a 2010 Toyota Camry as part of a benevolent car giveaway. The second annual event is sponsored by The Body Shop in Riverside.

"All of us have difficult times," said Bryan Clymer of The Body Shop. "It's no fault of their own they are in the circumstances they are in, so we found it was best for them to have this vehicle."

The new set of wheels will help Tyrone Sloan get to his dialysis appointments three times a week. The father of four is also on a kidney transplant list and needs to travel on a moment's notice.

"I got reliable transportation now," he said. "We don't have to worry and I don't know what to say. I'm just overwhelmed."

The car isn't the only thing the Sloan family received. Not only did they receive a trunk full of groceries, they also got their registration and car insurance paid for a year, topped off by a full tank of gas.

It's a gift that is being made possible by several organizations.

The Auto Club of Southern California donated a wrecked car to the auto shop, which then donated $13,000 worth of labor and parts to restore it. The volunteer center was then asked to help find a worthy family.

"The circumstances vary so vastly that it is very difficult," said Bobbie Neff of the Volunteer Center.

The road ahead is still filled with challenges for the Sloan family, but traveling it will be easier.
