Looks that are 'in,' 'out' for fall season

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. The first trend to be tossed out is bad plaids.

"Bad plaid comes around every season at this time of year. This year, leave it for the school crowd," said Jane Loddo of Harper's Bazaar.

The desired look now is "eclectic lady." Accomplish the look by layering various textures of feathers, fur and fringe.

Any colored clothing that is very berry bright is also out. Loddo says the new black is gray.

"Whether it's light, dark or charcoal, the stand-out color is the return of elegant gray, and it's a chic alternative to basic black," Loddo said.

One example is a White House, Black Market dark gray, tweed dress, featuring an asymmetrical neckline, flirty cascading ruffles and a waist-cinching gray belt.

The glam look from the 1980s did make a brief comeback, but the shoulder pads and neon colors are now out.

"This season, it's about military chic," Loddo said, adding that the military look actually began in the spring.

Try a pair of military camouflage cargo pants, and aim for some loaded with details, such as over-size pockets and military-inspired embellishments.
