Police shoot, kill man in Simi Valley

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. Simi Valley police said an officer was responding to a disturbance call at a home in the area of Sycamore Drive and Heywood Street about 6:30 p.m.

Before the officer arrived at the home, he encountered an armed man in the middle of the street, authorities said. They did not say what he was armed with.

The officer shot the suspect and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I was at the park and all I heard were gunshots, five gunshots," said Anthony Garibay, a witness. "I thought it was fireworks but once I was back I came up and saw policemen. I saw the body on the floor."

Adriana Bedolla, who lives near the area, also heard the gunfire.

"I was in my room and I heard more than four shots," Bedolla said. "I didn't know if they were shots. I couldn't ignore it. A few minutes later, I heard the cops."

Neighbors said they didn't hear any interaction between the officer and the man prior to the shooting.

It's unclear if the man was connected to the original disturbance call.

Residents said they did not recognize the man and do not believe he is from the neighborhood.

Officials said they expected to be out for most of the night investigating what happened.
