Audit questions value of red light cameras

LOS ANGELES

A new audit states that the police department has not done a good enough job of tracking accident information to know whether the cameras are actually making streets safer.

The audit recommends a new review of where cameras are installed.

Also, the audit confirms that the program has been losing money and warns that recent changes to state law could reduce revenue even more.

The report is being presented to the board of police commissioners Tuesday. That board will decide whether to keep the program going.
