Researchers try to unlock bedbug DNA

January 20, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
Scientists hope unlocking the genetic code of bedbugs will lead to better ways to destroy the pests.

Researchers at the University of Ohio are mapping the bedbugs' DNA. The number of infestations has skyrocketed in the U.S. over the past decade.

Scientists believe that's because the insects have adapted to pesticides, making them harder to kill.

The goal is to pinpoint and then manipulate specific genes to make it easier to get rid of the blood-sucking pests.
