Lawmakers in Orange County are asking the federal government for disaster relief money for last month's flooding.

They wrote a letter to President Barack Obama asking his administration to declare the county a disaster area to free up federal dollars.

Officials estimate the damage from flooding and mudslides at $36 million.

Many residents are still out of their homes and recovery work is expected to continue until March.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors issued a state of emergency for the county on Dec. 21.
