Osby becomes 1st African-American fire chief

LOS ANGELES

Daryl L. Osby was sworn in Thursday as the ninth chief of the /*Los Angeles County Fire Department*/. He's the first black fire chief in the department's 88-year history.

The 27-year veteran of the department was picked by the board of supervisors, who said Osby's impressive background makes him the right choice for the job.

He'll command around 4,400 men and women.
