Police step up St. Patrick's Day patrols

MID-MICHIGAN At the same time, many were out watching the Michigan State Spartans take to the hardwood. And as festivities wound down, law enforcement was out to making sure people made it home safely.

A lot of people walked up and down Saginaw Street going from business to business.

There was a sea of green across Mid-Michigan this evening. And on this day everyone is a bit Irish. Saint Patrick's Day celebrations at Paddy McGee's in Grand Blanc started in the morning and were going strong well into the night.

"Everybody's in green. Everybody is having fun," said Jennifer Garrison. "It's fun."

Along with the green beer, basketball fans were supporting green and white as the Michigan State University Spartans played in the NCAA tournament.

The spirits flowed throughout the evening at Sharky's in Burton, where they said behind the day before Thanksgiving, Saint Patrick's Day is one of their busiest nights.

To make sure the luck of the Irish doesn't run out on the way home, law enforcement will be keeping a close eye on drivers. Searching for those who make the decision to drink and get behind the wheel.

They say they don't want to ruin the fun, but they want to make sure everyone has a safe ending to their celebrations.

Michigan State Police will be out. There are stiffer penalties for drinking and driving, and police say no breaks will be given.
