Thousands of veterans losing out on Ohio bonuses

COLUMBUS, Ohio Since August, bonuses approved by Ohio voters have been available to veterans who served more than 90 days of active duty in the early 1990s Persian Gulf War or the more recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Veterans may be eligible for up to $1,500, while families of fallen service members may qualify for as much as $6,500.

The state Department of Veterans Services said Tuesday that $27.3 million has been paid so far to more than 33,500 veterans and families. But officials tell Ohio media outlets that at least 100,000 others who are eligible have not applied.

Department director Tom Moe says they're losing out on "real money" for whatever they need.
