Steve Cooley said this will be his last term as Los Angeles County District Attorney.

Cooley told Eyewitness News late Tuesday he would not run for a fourth term.

The county's top prosecutor said he has written his key supporters, asking them to back Chief Deputy District Attorney Jacquelyn Lacey in next year's election.

Cooley, a Republican, lost a close race last year for state attorney general.

He's spent 39 years in public service.
