Calif. homicide rate lowest level in 45 years

May 25, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
The number of murders in California is way down. New figures show the homicide rate in 2010 fell to its lowest level in 45 years.

There was a big year-to-year decrease in murders. Homicides dropped 9.6 percent in 2010 compared to 2009.

Other violent crimes were down, too. Forcible rapes fell 6 percent.

Robberies were down 8.9 percent and aggravated assaults fell 4.6 percent.

The state attorney general said the decrease in violent crime can be attributed to hard-working police.
