The incident happened at 152nd and Figueroa streets in the West Compton area.
Police said the driver was taking his friend to be treated for a gunshot wound when he sideswiped another vehicle. That caused his car to roll over and slam into the pole.
The person in the second vehicle wasn't hurt, but the first driver had some minor injuries.
Officials said the shooting victim is seriously wounded, and they believe the shooting is gang-related.
