New Zealand's capital gets rare sight of snow

August 15, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
New Zealand's capital city Wellington got the rare sight of snow, and forecasters are calling it a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The falling flakes disrupted many services, including canceled flights and mail delivery. Some roads were closed and recreational facilities such as libraries and swimming pools were shut in many centers.

Wellington rarely gets snow, and the few inches that fell are the most the city has seen in at least 30 years.

Forecasters expect the cold snap to continue through Wednesday.
