Officials said around 8 p.m. Tuesday, they received a call about the suspect walking on 13th Street near the department.
Surveillance cameras showed the suspect, Norris Phuoc Nguyen, 22, trying to open the front doors of the police station.
Officers confronted the suspect and were able to convince him to drop his rifle. Nguyen surrendered without further incident.
Nguyen told police he wanted to force officers into a suicide by cop scenario. Officials said no shots were fired and no one was hurt.
Nguyen was taken to a nearby hospital where he was held for further evaluation.
