Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly, was commander of the last and final space shuttle mission completed in May.
Kelly will retire Thursday in Washington, D.C., in a ceremony to be presided over by Vice President Joseph Biden.
Giffords will reportedly travel from Houston, where she is recuperating from a January shooting in Tucson. She will return to Houston after the ceremony.
