The incident happened on the 900 block of Redwood Street at about 10 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators said a Port Hueneme police officer tried to pull over a possible stolen vehicle.
They said after the driver stopped, he suddenly sped up again and drove at the officer. That's when the officer opened fire.
The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. His name was not released.
