Commercial truck drivers could face stiff penalties if they are caught using a handheld cell phone behind the wheel as of Monday.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's new ban affects all interstate travel by truckers.

It bans holding, dialing, texting and even reaching for cell phones while driving.

Hands-free devices will still be allowed.

The ban comes after a truck driver using his cell phone caused a crash that killed 11 people on a Kentucky highway last year.
