California colleges may ask students about sexual orientation

March 30, 2012 12:00:00 AM PDT
California colleges and universities are planning to ask applicants to identify their sexual orientation next year.

According to the Los Angeles Times, schools are weighing the move in response to a little-known state law. It encourages colleges to gauge the size of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender populations on campuses and whether they're being adequately served.

Answering the questions would be voluntary, but some have expressed concerns about privacy.
