Boston University student charged in fatal New Zealand crash

WELLINGTON, New Zealand

The unidentified 20-year-old male student is facing seven counts of careless driving. Each of the charges carries a maximum jail term of three months.

Twenty-six Boston University students studying this semester in New Zealand and Australia were traveling last Saturday to a well-known volcanic crater hike when one of their vans rolled, killing Austin Brashears of Huntington Beach, Roch Jauberty of Woodland Hills and Daniela Lekhno of Manalapan, N.J.

The driver and four other students were injured. Police do not believe the driver or any other students involved used alcohol or drugs before the crash, investigators said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
