Utah stranded hiker breaks leg, crawls to safety

SALT LAKE CITY Utah

Daniel Samuelsen spent three nights alone, trapped in a tunnel in the foothills east of Salt Lake City.

He went for a morning hike and fell into the tunnel near the mouth of a canyon. The fall broke his leg.

With his cellphone dead, Samuelsen started to wonder how long he'd be in there.

"I took some rocks and banged them up against the side of the tunnel and I screamed for help," he said. But no one could hear his cries for help.

Four days passed, and by Saturday afternoon, without food or water, Samuelson had to do something. That's when he began to crawl and two hours later he saw a man on the highway.

Samuelsen is now recovering at St. Mark's Hospital.
