LA City Councilman Richard Alarcon ordered to stand trial

LOS ANGELES

One of the 18 criminal counts against the councilman was dropped, leaving him with 17 felony charges. His wife, Flora Montes De Oca Alarcon, is charged with six counts.

In 2010, Alarcon was accused of living outside Council District 7 in Panorama City, and then lying about it. Alarcon says he was renovating the older house and occasionally lived in the newer Sun Valley home owned by his wife.

A judge had dismissed the case in May, saying the district attorney's office failed to provide evidence favorable to the Alarcons, but prosecutors immediately re-filed the case.

A former state senator and assemblyman, Alarcon has served as the representative for Council District 7 since 2007.

The couple is due back in court Oct. 18 for arraignment.
