Suspect sought in fatal shooting of a man in Sylmar

The fatal shooting occurred near Fenton Ave and Fernmont Street around 1:40 a.m. while the victim was taking a walk in the usually quiet neighborhood.

According to authorities, several neighbors heard a gunshot and called police who found the victim lying in the street. The victim, who has not been identified pending notification to his family, told police he had been shot by a Hispanic man driving a gray American-made car.

The victim was then rushed to Holy Cross Hospital where he later died of his gunshot wound.

The 29-year-old victim, who was of Jamaican and Asian ancestry, had relocated to California from North Carolina five months ago. According to authorities, he worked behind the scenes in TV commercials with his girlfriend, who lived a block away from where the shooting occurred.

Police do not suspect the shooting was gang-related.

"The victim had no gang ties that we can find," said Lt. Paul Vernon commanding officer of the Mission Detective Division. "The neighborhood where the shooting occurred is not known for gang activity and few calls to police are made there."

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to call Detective Gene Parshall with Mission Homicide Unit at (818) 838-9954 or Crimestoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
