The helmets may not adequately protect people in the case of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who tested four-extra large helmets earlier this year.
In a notice posted on the NHTSA website, Vega said the recall affects all large, extra-large and extra-extra-large helmet models made between May 2011 and October 2012.
According to the company, the helmets failed to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards due to changes in the model's shell design. Vega Helmet Corp, based in Tukwila, Wash., said they plan to reconfigure the helmet's design immediately.
So far there's no evidence that anyone has been injured because of the defective helmets.
The recall will start in late Jan.
