Yorba Linda shooting investigation underway

YORBA LINDA, Calif.

According to Orange County officials, a deputy contacted a male subject in the parking lot of a Denny's at the Savi Ranch Shopping Complex on Oakcrest Circle around 2 p.m. Upon contact, a deputy-involved shooting occured.

It's unknown what the initial contact was or if the suspect fired at the Orange County deputy.

Investigators say the suspect took off in his Escalade after he was hit and led deputies on a pursuit which ended several miles away on the eastbound 91 Freeway at Coal Canyon. That's where he was taken into custody after side swiping another vehicle.

Witnesses say, as deputies approached with their guns drawn, the suspect got out of his Escalade and collapsed.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital. His condition remains unknown.

The officer was not injured.

Traffic along the 91 Freeway backed up for miles and hours as the investigation continued.

At the Denny's restaurant, 25 to 30 customers and employees could only sit and wait as authorities canvassed the crime scene. Most people at the restaurant said they didn't hear the gunfire and were unaware of the drama that unfolded in the parking lot.

"As we were going to leave, somebody walked in and said 'you can't leave the building, sorry,'" said Chenoa Regan of Yorba Linda.
