'Partridge Family' actor Dave Madden dies at 82

NEW YORK

Madden died Thursday at a hospice center near his home in the Jacksonville area, his niece said.

On "The Partridge Family," Madden played Reuben Kinkaid, who managed the family band and regularly clashed with its impish pre-teen bassist, played by Danny Bonaduce. The two became the show's comic duo.

While Madden's character was bedeviled by the youngsters who surrounded him, co-star Shirley Jones said that off-camera he "loved kids."

Prior to "The Partridge Family," Madden was part of the ensemble on the "Laugh-In" comedy series. He also had a recurring role as one of the customers at Mel's Diner on the long-running sitcom "Alice." His other credits include "Bewitched," ''Barney Miller," ''Happy Days," ''The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island."

Madden was born in Ontario, Canada, and grew up in North Terre Haute, Ind. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
