Ventura doctor accused of over-prescribing meds

VENTURA, Calif.

Dr. Terry Stanger, who has an office in Ventura but resides in Agoura Hills, was arrested as part of an investigation by the Ventura County Combined Agency Taskforce. The 67-year-old faces 15 felony counts ranging from drug dealing to money laundering.

Investigators allege Stanger over-prescribed opiates, anti-depressants and other controlled medications without a legitimate medical purpose. They also say Stranger was mailing medications across the U.S. and Europe.

Detectives seized more than 25,000 pills of highly addictive medication that were sold or destined for sale outside the realm of normal professional practice.

Officials also seized hundreds of thousands of dollars, which they suspect was gathered through criminal activity.

Stanger's alleged crimes came to light when officials discovered that local drug dealers were getting their supply from Stanger. Officials also traced back several fatal overdoses to the doctor's prescriptions.

Stanger is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 19.
