The violence erupted around 4:30 p.m. at Prairie Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard. According to investigators, the victim and a woman got into a verbal altercation in the parking lot. The cabbie then went into Hawthorne Quick Checks.
"The victim goes into one of the businesses. As he comes out, a male black adult assaults him. The victim goes down to the ground. He's transported to a local hospital, where he is pronounced dead," said Lt. Holly Francisco with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Friends say the victim is a 53-year-old cab driver from Nigeria. They say he had been driving a cab for several years and they have no idea who would want to hurt him. He leaves behind a wife and an 18-year-old son.
Detectives are hoping the numerous surveillance cameras in the complex will be able to provide some vital clues as they try to track down the unidentified man and woman. It's unknown if the victim knew the man and woman.
