Trial date set in fatal Santa Ana fight case

SANTA ANA, Calif.

Vanesa Zavala, 25, and Candace Brito, 27, will be tried for murder beginning on May 5. A pretrial hearing was scheduled for April 25 after a motion to dismiss the charges was denied Tuesday morning.

Zavala and Brito are accused of beating Pham, 23, outside a nightclub restaurant in Santa Ana during a fight in the early morning hours of January 18. An argument between two groups in line outside the club led up to the fight, according to police.

Pham was hospitalized after the fight, sustained brain damage and was taken off life support five days later.

Zavala and Brito have both pleaded not guilty to murder. A third woman named a person of interest was still sought in the case.

Cellphone video posted online shows a snippet of the violent confrontation in January. Police say Pham was punched and kicked until she lost consciousness.
