CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- People don't always leave good tips when they get poor service at a restaurant. But a husband and wife in Iowa left their server a $100 tip for their $66.65 bill, despite slow service.
Makenzie and Steven Schultz said it took 20 minutes for them to get their water and over an hour to get their food. But, they said, they also noticed their waiter was serving 12 tables and bartending. That's when they decided to reward the server for his hard work with the big tip.
"We just kind of switched our mindset into, 'let's just enjoy dinner and our anniversary,' and everything, yeah, just took a long time," Makenzie Schultz told ABC affiliate KCRG-TV.
The couple left a $100 tip and a note reading, "We've both been in your shoes. Paying it forward."
"That was super unexpected and really nice. I mean, it caught me off guard. I expected - I wasn't expecting that. A little misty I guess. I don't know, it was a very good ending to a really stressful night," server Kyle Hanson said.
The Schultzes posted the story on Facebook where it went viral, earning over a million likes and 150,000 shares. They say they just wanted to share their story as a reminder "to think of the entire situation before you judge."
