Suspect arrested after hours-long barricade in Carson

CARSON, Calif. (KABC) -- Deputies took a barricaded suspect into custody Sunday morning following an hours-long standoff in Carson, officials said.

Deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 23400 block of Avalon Boulevard at about 11 p.m. Saturday night. Officials engaged in a standoff with the suspect, who was armed with a knife, for nine hours before he surrendered peacefully at about 8 a.m., according to officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Carson Station.

The man did not have any hostages and no injuries were reported, according to authorities.

According to sheriff's officials, it was unclear what led to the barricade but the unidentified suspect was wanted in connection to an assault. Neighbor Lorenzo Ashley, however, said he was attacked by the suspect with a knife Saturday afternoon and called police.

"The guy came at me with a knife. He bust through my door, unannounced, unpredicted. He's schizophrenic; he had a knife to my throat," Ashley explained. "I fought him off, was able to subdue him, called the police, and then he came down to the garage with two knives at the police. Since 10 p.m. last night, I've been across the street waiting on them to get him out."

Nearby residents had to be evacuated as crisis negotiation teams, L.A. County fire crews and other officials moved in to get the man to surrender.

At one point, authorities said a fire erupted from inside the home, but it was unclear how that began.

The suspect was eventually arrested and expected to be transported to the Carson Sheriff's Station, where officials said he would be booked for assault with a deadly weapon.
