CHATSWORTH, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found beaten to death outside his apartment building in Chatsworth on Thursday.

Detectives were called to the 10300 block of De Soto Avenue shortly after 2:30 a.m. Police said the victim, who was found on the driveway, had blunt-force trauma to his face.

The apartment complex is transitional housing. One resident said the victim was the manager of the building, who had been outside talking to someone. The resident also said he heard gunshots.

"I saw him like at least three hours before it happened. Now I wish I opened the door and looked out, but then if I had done that, I could be number two," said Dennis Goble, a neighbor.

People who knew the victim bowed their heads and held hands after talking to police. The victim's identity was not immediately released. Police only described him as being 55 years old.

At this point in the investigation, police say they have no idea who killed this man or why.
